  • Villa del Cobre: Under Construction

  • Villa del Cobre is the first of a series of private residences in Mexico that Bittertang has been asked to design.  Situated in a small rural community in Michoacan, the design of the house presents itself as a new spatial model in its vernacular context. Local construction methods and materials are challenged in this proposal, as well as, the traditional norms for spatial distributions.

A body of double curving arches stretch across the entire first floor freeing the plan and organizing the program in a series of cylindrical spaces.   The elastic arches are adorned with customized profiles of Cantera Stone, material acquired locally and typically used in Colonial Haciendas and Cathedrals.

The rest of the house plays off its frisky first floor and unfolds towards the street with a bloated 4 meter high entrance.
